AWARDS STUDENT-EDUCATOR SCHOLARSHIP
Elaine
Davis is attending Bryan College in Dayton. She wrote, "I want
to encourage children, even at the elementary level to set high
goals and as their teacher, provide encouragement and resources to
move towards their dreams... I want children to know that they matter
and their lives have purpose ... One of the most respected
professors at my school was once asked why he wore a suit to class
everyday. He simply replied that he takes what he does seriously. I
believe that is one of the reasons he is so highly esteemed in the
professional attitude he has toward teaching ... Professional
educators hold themselves and their students to high standards,
bringing growth to the educational system.
Valerie
Powell-Collom is attending Trevecca Nazarene
University in Nashville. She wrote, "...education has
empowered me to have unbelievable opportunities. I
want to give those opportunities to the children I
teach... Educators must have a professional attitude to
model the type of attitude desired in the work world... In
ninth grade, I had an outstanding Algebra teacher... She
stayed many days after school with me. She helped me
to understand math and to love myself. She also
taught me that having a positive attitude makes learning
more fun.
Amber Chapman (left) is
a student at Middle Tennessee State University.
Ms. Chapman “hopes to further develop a passion
and love for learning that will one day shine through to
her students” because she realizes “how far a good
education will take you”.
One of the Education Department faculty at Columbia
State Community college (where Ms. Chapman previously
attended) proclaims that Ms. Chapman “is an attentive
student” and also “that Ms. Chapman has revealed a
creativity that she admires.”
Kathryn Evans (middle) is
currently enrolled at the University of Tennessee at
Martin. Ms Evans seeks to attain knowledge of
“the world’s diversity” and through this hopes “to
encourage her students to explore their own would as
well”.
One previous teacher of hers states that she
“would not hesitate to enroll her own children” in a
class taught by Ms. Evans, and another teacher says that
Evans possesses “qualities that will be pivotal in her
success as a teacher.”
Julia Piers attends
Wheaton College in Illinois where she is working on her
masters in education.
She says that “the opportunity to ignite in
students a desire to learn, to encourage students to
believe in themselves, and to challenge students to work
harder” are all reasons why she wants to teach.
One of Ms. Piers’ previous teachers at
Carson-Newman College says that “Julia … is one who
inspires other to excellence by her integrity and high
standards … and is a person I deeply respect.”
Ashley
Holmertz is a
student at Trevecca Nazarene University.
Ms. Holmertz looks forward to entering the field of
Education. She
said, “I love to listen to them … I want to be an
encourager to students … someone who really cares about
them.” Those
who know her well agree that she will do well.
Her former Principal, Donna Lange said, “Also,
all of her teachers, administrators, and fellow students
love Ashley and her upbeat personality and gentle
spirit.” Cynthia
Jones of Equitable Trust Company said, “Ashley has a
gift of encouraging those around her. Encouraging them
through difficult situations, encouraging them to make
good, solid choices, encouraging them to overcome and be
the best that they can be. Her friends would say that she
brings out the best of them.”
